History of Prague
870 - Building of the famous Prague Castle
926 - Building of St. Vitus rotunda within the Prague Castle compund.
10th century - construction of the Vysehrad Castle on the Vltava bank on the opposite side of the river.
965 - Prague first mentioned in a manuscript by Ibrahim Ibn Jakub, a Jewish merchant.
973 - Establishment of the Prague bishopric.
1085 - Prague becomes the offcial residence of the first Bohemian king Vratislav I
1172 - Building of the Juditas Bridge, only the second stone bridge that was built in Central Europe.
1230 - Construction of the Old Town
1257 - Establishement of the Lesser Town
1310 - 1346 - John of Luxembourg takes control as the king of Bohemia
1320 - building of the Hradcany
1338 - construction completed of the Old Town Hall which increases the importance of the city.
1344 - Prague bishopric upgraded to archbishopric, beginning with St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral (
1346-1378 - Charles IV period - Prague becomes the capital of the Bohemian Kingdom and of the Holy Roman Empire
1348 - Establishment of the New Town and the building of the first university in Central Europe (Charles University)
1419-1437 - attempts of the church clergy to introduce reforms in the church becomes the Hussite revolutionary movement
1526 - Habsburg Dynasty ascends the Bohemian throne (until 1918)
1583-1611 - Rudolf II inaugerated the king of Bohemia, and Prague becomes the emperors residence as well as the centre for social and cultural life.
1618-1620 - The defeat of the Czech nobles uprising; Czech language and Czech national consciousness begins to lessen
1784 - The year for the unification of the four independent Prague neigborhoods (Hradcany, Lesser Town, Old Town and New Town)
1784-1848 - Czech national revival, beginning of the industrial revolution, establishment of Czech institutions
1918 - Independence of Czechoslovakia, Prague becomes the new state capital
1939-1945 - occupation by the Nazi Germany
1945 - the Prague uprising, liberation of Prague by Soviet Republic's army
1948 - seizure of power by KSC after the February putsch
1968 - Prague Spring - an attempt to reform socialism, intervention of 5 states of the Warsaw Pact
1989 - The so called "Velvet Revolution", Vaclav Havel elected the president of Czechlosovakia
1993 - January 1 - Formation of the independent Czech Republic -dividing Slovakia and Czeck Republic.
1993 - January 26 - Vaclav Havel elected the first president of the independent Czech Republic
1999 - March 12 - the Czech Republic becomes a NATO member.
2004 - May 1st- entry of the Czech Republic into EU
